A bill aimed at improving organ donation safety in Kentucky is set to become law.

House Bill 510 adds new safeguards to the organ donation process, following concerns raised in past cases, including one involving a man who nearly had his organs harvested while he was still alive. Under the new law, doctors must stop the organ donation process if a patient shows any signs of life or changes in their condition. Before anything can continue, a separate doctor that is not connected to the organ donation team must evaluate the patient.

Supporters said the changes are meant to make sure there’s no doubt a person has died before organ donation moves forward.
