Members of Breckinridge County Fiscal Court held a special called meeting Monday (2/16) to gain information and input regarding creating a county planning and zoning commission.

Meade County Planning and Zoning Administrator Jennifer Smart presented how planning and zoning operates. Smart outlined the basic requirements and noted that Meade County had some additional requirements on certain topics. Among the topics inquired about included staffing, fee structures for permits and how the flow of the process operated through various levels with Fiscal Court having the final approval upon completing the process.

During the public comment session, several people voiced concerns of adding another level of government that would impose on residents, while others supported the idea of  developing a land use policy. County leaders were encouraged to be mindful of where industry could be potentially located. Some noted the county was ideal for some modern industrial uses due to the availability of power infrastructure and the Ohio River.

No action was taken on the issue and no timelines have been presented as to when county leaders will continue conversations on the issue.
