WINTER STORM AFTERMATH: Snow Removal On-Going; Travel Still Discouraged

UNDATED (01/28/26) — Breckinridge County along with the rest of the region continues to dig out from the weekend’s winter storm that dropped snow and sleet on the region. Roads crews have been working to clear the roads of snow, but Judge-Executive Maurice Lucas told WXBC’s Gene Webster on Tuesday that the process is slow going. due to the impacted snow and sleet. He continues to urge residents to refrain from unnecessary travel as the crews continue to clear the roads.

In an early Wednesday morning update, the State Highway Department in Elizabethtown reported crews are out early this morning applying another round of salt to help peel the next layer of compacted snow and ice along covered routes. District 4 officials are hopeful with sunny skies and readings in the 20’s, treatment and plowing will be more effective.

Area schools and government operations continue to be closed or delayed into Wednesday: Breckinridge County and Cloverport Schools were closed for a third straight day on Wednesday, with some district already cancelling classes for the rest of the week.  You can find a list HERE.

Governor Andy Beshear said during a Tuesday morning press conference that a lot of progress has been made in restoring powers and clearing Kentucky roads, but is still advising residents not to go out if they can avoid it. As of Wednesday morning, 16- thousand customers were still without power from the weekend storm. He noted four deaths around the state that mat have been related to the winter storm, and officials are working to determine the cause of death in each case.
