Shorter days and cooler nights trigger deer mating season, and put deer on the move. Drivers should expect to encounter deer almost anywhere this time of the year because as the leaves change colors and foliage disappears, deer are more likely to travel longer distances to find food and shelter. Motorists are encouraged to stay aware, be prepared, slow down and use headlights.
Last year, 3,406 highway crashes in 2024 that reported a vehicle striking a deer in Kentucky.
