FRANKFORT (07/01/26) — This Independence Day weekend, Kentucky State Police is prepared to join law enforcement across the nation for Operation C.A.R.E.(Crash Awareness Reduction Effort) between Thursday (07/02) through Sunday (07/06). The effort aims to prevent impaired driving and keep roadways safe for everyone during one of the busiest travel holidays of the year.
Officials say while the weekend may be a time for celebration, but there must be responsible decision-making, encouraging everyone to plan ahead, drive sober, buckle up, and help ensure everyone arrives home safely.
According to the Kentucky Office of Highway Safety, 91 people were killed in Kentucky during traffic crashes that involved alcohol in 2025. This accounted for nearly 14% of all traffic fatalities in the commonwealth last year. The International Association of Chiefs of Police initiative will have KSP troopers strategically patrolling highways and rural routes, focusing on identifying drivers who may be under the influence of drugs or alcohol. The goal is to stop impaired drivers before a tragedy occurs. Here are some tips to stay safe this Fourth of July:
- Choose a Designated Driver – Decide before you celebrate. Call a friend or use a ride service. Never drive impaired.
- Speak Up and Step In – If someone appears impaired, speak up and help them make the safer choice.
- Know When to Call it a Night – Encourage guests to rest, stay over, or arrange other transportation instead of taking risks.
- Set a Good Example – Be the example for those around you. Choose not to drive impaired and ensure those around you do not either.
