
1/12/2026—Tonia Saettel was re-elected Chairman of the Breckinridge County Board of Education at their regular meeting Monday afternoon. Vanessa Lucas was re-elected Vice-Chairman. Brandon Hayes will serve as Secretary/Treasurer. The Board will meet the second Monday of the month at 4:00pm at the Board Annex.
In a brief meeting of the Breckinridge County School District Finance Corporation, the same officers were elected.
In other business, Dr. Michael Broadbent presented the Winter 2026 Academic Update. The number of 4-year-old students who are ready for Kindergarten grew from 21% to 52.47%. MAP Reading scores improved by 5.4% from Fall; Math scores were up 9.6%; Science scores were up 8.6%; and Language scores were up 1.4%. Broadbent recognized all staff members for their efforts.
Brandon Hayes updated the Board on implantation of Magma Math. The program has three goals: implementation of common, standards aligned assessment; quick, meaningful formative checks; and real-time data to drive next-day instruction.
Board members were told that there were multiple bidders on the Middle School and Area Technology Center construction projects. Bids will be opened January 21.
The Board approved the 2026/27 draft budget.
The Board approved a Memorandum of Understanding with the Kentucky Department of Education Office of Career and Technical Education.
A revised 2025/26 school calendar was approved. This was due to days missed in November and December. Superintendent Dr. Nick Carter said the calendar was subject to further change depending on the weather conditions.
The Board approved start and end times for each school. There were no changes from last year.
The Board approved continuation of the Non-Traditional Instructional Learning Plan for the 2026/27 school year.
The Board approved the 2026-2028 Family Resource Center Youth Services contract.
The Board approved member attendance to the Kentucky School Board Annual Conference and the COSSBA National Conference.
At the beginning of the meeting, Dr. Carter recognized Board members for their years of service: Rick Taylor-9 years; Vanessa Lucas and Joy Campbell-15 years; Mark Biggs 5.5 years; and Tonia Saettel-14 years.
