WHITESBURG (06/04/25) — A former eastern Kentucky sheriff charged in the murder of a district court judge last week is now asking for the indictment against him to be thrown out. Former Letcher County Sheriff Shawn “Mickey” Stines is charged with murder in the death of Letcher County District Judge Kevin Mullins in the judge’s chamber last September. Attorneys for Stines say the Commonwealth withheld information from the grand jury. Attorneys also say there was an intentional failure to record proceedings in front of the Letcher County grand jury. Stines is currently being held without bond, but his counsel is also asking for a bond hearing.
