Breckinridge County School officials unveiled plans for the proposed new middle school project Thursday (5/29) night. The project will operate in three phases that includes construction of a new football field in the sports complex that will allow space for the new middle school building to be constructed on the existing football field, then demolition of the current middle school building and construction of a new bus and parking area to connect to the Area Technology Center.

The estimated $45 million project will enhance the sports programs of both the middle and high schools by providing extra space to be utilized for football, soccer, track and field and marching band.
Superintendent Dr. Nick Carter told WXBC News the project was has been worked on since 2021, when the original plans for renovations to the current building exceeded nearly 80 percent of the cost of a new building due to inflation. He said the school board reevaluated the situation and was able to receive funding from the state with the assistance of local state officials to make be able to move forward with the project. The new facility will replace the current middle school facility which was built in 1964 as Breckinridge County High School and briefly housed Hardinsburg Elementary School in the late 1990s before becoming the middle school in 2001.
The relocation of the football field is expected to begin this fall with the new facility ready to open in the Fall of 2026. Construction on the new building will immediately begin with the goal of opening in August of 2028. You can watch the entire Reveal on our Video Page.
