UNDATED (02/17/25) — A “Winter Storm Watch” is in effect for the area for Tuesday night into Wednesday evening for the possibility of 3-5 inches of snow.

Snow on Sunday added to the woes already being created from Saturday’s heavy rainfall. The Kentucky Mesonet Station near Hardinsburg recorded over four inches of rain during the day on Saturday. That led to flooded roads and emergency services responding to water rescues and high water crossing attempts. Officials urge drivers to avoid low-lying or flood prone roads.

As of Sunday night, the state highway department had the following roads still covered by water…

  • KY 110 Mile Markers 5-6
  • KY 690 Mile Markers 16-17
  • KY 333 Mile Markers 10-11
  • KY 2781 Mile Markers 0-1
  • KY 1740 Mile Markers 5-6 (Due to a slide)

The flooding also forced some area schools to alter class schedules today: Grayson County and Ohio County schools are closed today, while Perry Central Schools in Indiana are on a Two-Hour Delay.

President Trump has declared a federal emergency for the state, opening the door to FEMA assistance. Eastern Kentucky has been hardest hit by flooding according to officials. In Pikeville, flood waters reached the grounds of the high school which was serving as shelter for families that had to evacuate from flooding elsewhere.

At least nine people have been confirmed dead in Kentucky following severe weather and flooding over the weekend. Among those confirmed dead are a woman and a child in Hart County, as well as seven additional fatalities in Pike, Washington, Nelson, and Clay counties. Governor Andy Beshear said Sunday emergency crews have performed more than 1,000 water rescues.

Due to the on-going weather conditions, the State Highway Department has postponed the closure of the Kentucky 259 bridge over Rough River Lake at Eveleigh until next Monday the 24th.
