HARDINSBURG – Several residents braved the rain to discuss the proposed New Frontiers Solar Park at the Breckinridge County Fairgrounds Thursday (1/30) evening. EDP Renewables hosted an open house event to allow community members to ask questions and learn more about the project.

The 100 megawatt solar park will be built on approximately 800 to 900 acres on the southwest side of the Hardinsburg City limits. The solar park is expected to generate enough electricity to power approximately 16,600 homes. The electricity is expected to be generated and ingested into an existing power transmission substation, just west of Hardinsburg.

Tom LoTurco, Vice President of Development, told WXBC News this project is vital for the rapidly increasing need for electrical power for industry across the nation and the region as economic development continues. The company has already made agreements with a entity, who wants to purchase the power from the project. EDP Renewables is currently placed into a cue position to come online by a designated time. LoTurco said the company is working in good faith with the county leaders by entering into a memorandum of understanding, which sets self imposed higher standards than the original county solar ordinance allowed regarding setbacks and buffer areas surrounding the project, which will provide better shielding of solar panels from the public view.

The $200 million capital investment of the New Frontiers Solar Park is expected to be built in 2026 and provide additional revenue into the county by paying participating landowners approximately $35 million over the course of the project and about $7 million to local government. Construction of the project is expected to create between 250 to 600  jobs and several permanent full time jobs once the solar park is operational.
