PRIMARY ELECTION: Lucas, Richardson, Anthony-Armes Win Countywide Races; Three Magistrates Unseated

UNDATED (05/17/22) — Incumbent Republican Maurice Lucas laid a claim to a 4th term as County Judge-Executive in Tuesday’s Republican Primary, turning back three opponents.

Unofficial numbers from the County Clerk’s office showed Lucas winning nearly 49% of the vote in Tuesday’s primary, followed by Kevin Bruce Drane at just over 33%, Jesse Stephen Clark with 11% and Rita Moore with 7%. No Democrat filed for the race.

Incumbent Sheriff William “Billy” Richardson won the GOP nomination, defeating former Deputy Bruce Anthony in a rematch of 2020 Special Election for the Office. Richardson won with 62% of the vote. With no Democrat opponent, Richardson would serve a full term starting in January.

Nikki Anthony-Armes won the Primary for County Attorney over incumbent Brett Butler, with 56% of the votes cast. No Democrat filed for the race.

Three Fiscal Court Republican Magistrates facing primary challengers lost in Tuesday’s Primary: William “Billy” Blair was defeated by former Magistrate Shane Beavin in the 2nd District; Carolyn Butler was unseated in the 5th by former Magistrate Edwin “Sam” Moore and 6th District incumbent Tim Milburn was defeated by Charles Brandon Henning, who will face Democrat Joey Galloway in November. 3rd District incumbent Gary Greenwell defeated Troy Board in the GOP Primary.

Jeremy Armstrong defeated three opponents for the 1st District Magistrate’s race: Armstrong polled 46% to Justin Mattingly’s 25%, Ricky Bennett’s 22% and Heath Eskridge’s 7%. Incumbent Democrat James Henning did not file for election and no other Democrats filed.

In the Constable’s races: Incumbents Bill Seelye (1st), Robert French (2nd) and Wayne Beauchamp (4th) won in Tuesday’s GOP Primaries.

In the U.S. Senate primary, incumbent Republican Rand Paul handily defeated five opponents, while Incumbent Brett Guthrie claimed the Primary win over Lee Watts and Brent Feher.

Democrats only voted in two races on Tuesday: Former State Representative Charles Booker carried the county en route to the Democrat nomination, while Democrat Hank Linderman won the County primary and the Districtwide race to oppose Guthrie in November.
