Sports: Prep Winter Sports Delayed; NBA Draft

LEXINGTON (11/18/20) — The Kentucky High School Athletic Association Board of Control voted Wednesday (11/18) afternoon to postpone the start of the winter sports season until the first of January. The decision impacts basketball season, which was slated to begin next week, as well as wrestling and other winter sports. (As it stands, the football playoffs are not impacted by the decision.)

UNDATED (AP) — The Minnesota Timberwolves selected Georgia freshman guard Anthony Edwards the No. 1 pick in the delayed NBA draft. Edwards became the 11th straight one-and-done player to be the top pick. (Former UK players Tyrese Maxey was taken 21st by Philadelphia and Immanuel Quickley 25th by Oklahoma City.)

UNDATED (11/18/20) — Other draft picks of note: UK’s Nick Richards was in the 2nd round by New Orleans, while former U-of-L player Jordan Nwora was selected by Milwaukee in the 2nd round.

NEW YORK (AP) — New York Mets second baseman Robinson Canó has been suspended for 162 games by Major League Baseball after his positive test for a performance-enhancing drug. The 38-year-old Canó will miss the entire 2021 season and lose $24 million in salary.
