Unheralded Landry Holds First Round Open Lead

OAKMONT, Pa. (AP) — Along with all the rain on the first day of play, the big story at the U.S. Open is the play of the 624th-ranked player in the world. The man in question is Andrew Landry, who completed his delayed first round this morning and stands in first place at 4-under after an opening 66. That’s the lowest opening-round score in the first round of a major at Oakmont, bettering the 67s put up by Ben Hogan in the 1953 U.S. Open and Tom Watson in the 1978 PGA Championship.

Defending champion Jordan Spieth (speeth) completed his first round with a 2-over 72. Rory McIlroy posted a 7-over 77 and Masters champ Danny Willett had a 5-over 75.

Play was halted three times on Thursday because of rain.
